¿Qué tan frecuente es el autismo?
Las probabilidades de ser autista pueden ser difíciles de precisar. La prevalencia se dispara en función de diferentes factores como las condiciones socioeconómicas, la raza, el sexo, etc. Esto significa que no existe una cifra que pueda considerarse como la estadística definitiva sobre la prevalencia del autismo.
En un estudio realizado en 2020, se hizo una estimación general de que 1 en 36 de todos los niños se encuentran en el espectro autista. En el caso de los niños, esto afecta aproximadamente a 1 en 11.4, y en el de las niñas, a 1 en 43.0. Esto significa que un diagnóstico de autismo es casi 4 veces más frecuente en niños que en niñas.
También es importante tener en cuenta que las minorías raciales y étnicas tienden a ser diagnosticadas a un ritmo diferente que las personas mayores y los estadounidenses blancos no hispanos. En estudios anteriores, este grupo fue diagnosticado con menor frecuencia; sin embargo, en este estudio 2020 , el número de diagnosticados fue mayor.
Dicha variación podría deberse al coste y a otros factores implicados en las citas con el médico (como la necesidad de los padres de ausentarse del trabajo, la búsqueda de guarderías o similares). When it comes to autism, as with many other conditions, genetics, the environment, and biology play a factor. This makes it more difficult for studies to prove causation and results.1
¿Están vinculados el autismo y la inteligencia?
In one way or another, autism stats are often linked to the idea that those afflicted by the condition are more intelligent than the rest of the population. This idea became popularized by pieces of media such as the popular 1988 movie Rain Man, which stereotyped the condition.
In Rain Man, Raymond Babbitt, played by Dustin Hoffman, was the main character. He was on the spectrum and presented as other-like and abnormal. Kim Peek, who the character was loosely based on, was on the spectrum. However, in addition, he had savant syndrome. This specific condition provided him the ability to count and remember items that would seem an impossible task to most other people.2
